Chapter 14

Girlfriend

Noah sat outside Leah’s building, in his Escalade, waiting for her to come home. He couldn’t say exactly what it was that made him want to see her so bad. Well, maybe he could. He missed her. He lit a Dunhill and stared out the window. Noah liked Leah a hell of a lot more than he was comfortable with and when he didn’t see her, it bothered him.

He watched her now as she drove up in her Volkswagon Jetta. She got out of the car, smiling at him. Noah got out of his truck, smiling at her. He crossed the street checking her out. She was dressed real simple in a pair of jeans and a white halter, but she looked good. Real good.

“Hey, Noah. You sittin’ out here waiting on me?” She asked, smiling at him brightly. She seemed very glad to see him.

Noah tilted his head and smiled at her. “Well, it’s a nice day. I went for a drive and ended up here. Imagine that.”

Leah’s smile got a little brighter. “No you didn’t. You missed me and you came to see me. That’s a serious compliment coming from you, Noah.”

Noah raised his eyebrows and held onto his smile. She had him on that one. Leah walked around and opened her trunk.

“If you’re not gonna tell me I’m right, you can at least help me with my bags.”

Noah smirked. “Yeah, I can do that.”

He helped her up to her sunny apartment and put the bags on the kitchen counter. Leah started putting her groceries away.

“It’s nice to see you, Noah. I haven’t seen much of you since we went back to work. What have they got you doing?”

Noah shrugged. “A little of this, a little of that. I don’t think the higher ups think Keith was the end of that dirty string of cops.”

Leah looked at him over one golden brown shoulder. “I don’t think so, either. How’s Lucas? I haven’t seen much of him, either.”

Noah watched her lean over to put something away in a low cabinet. It was a lovely sight to see. “He’s good, I guess. Still tryin’ to deal with Nick. She’s bein’ a little difficult, but I guess that’s understandable.”

Leah kept talking with her back to him. Noah took a step forward. “Yeah, she’s being difficult. I was with her earlier. This thing with Keith really shook her up. We had lunch and she kept looking around and acting nervous the whole time. She looked scared to death, like she was expecting Keith to pop out of somewhere and come at her. I tried to remind her that Keith is dead, but she kept acting jumpy. I’m worried about her, Noah.”

“I guess we all are, Leah, but she’s been through a lot. People don’t come outta shit like that real easy. It took Luke a long time to deal with the stuff that went down with Justine. Nick’s tough. She’ll get through this.” He said it lightly, but he was going to make sure to mention that jumpy shit to Lucas.
